Biographical Information
Born in Nashville, raised in Franklin, Tennessee. Raymond credits his family for fostering in him a sense of curiosity, drive, and fortitude.
"My father said to me, the day I told him I wasn’t going into agriculture, whatever you do… do it well".
Raymond grew up taking martial arts, gymnastics, swimming, playing football, soccer, and being an avid outdoorsman.
Raymond was a member of the 4H club and an Eagle Scout by age 15. He spent every weekend in the woods or on road trips with his best friends.
Artistically, he had a very renaissance youth; writing, sketching, woodcarving, leather working, playing percussion and writing lyrics in ‘jam bands’ around Nashville.
Raymond also first came to acting in High School, after a series of injuries made him decide to stop playing football.
Raymond received a B.A. in Philosophy from The University of the South at Sewanee. “Hands down one of the best educations in the country”. He was inducted into the National Philosophy Society and wrote his thesis on Kierkegaard’s Indirect Communication.
At Sewanee, Raymond tried every hat the theatre had to offer; from actor to director and playwright; from stage manager to carpenter, . He worked with visiting artists such as Danny Hoch, Paul Bonin Rodriguez, Daisy Foote, Mace Perlman, and Stephanie Fleischmann.
Raymond was accepted in the Fall of 2002 into the Professional Conservatory at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. He was in the last class under the guidance of Bill Esper on a full time basis. He cherishes the lessons and technique he learned at Rutgers. He completed his MFA in Acting, May 2005.
In 2005, he was named Artistic Associate of Mile Square Theatre, a professional theatre in Hoboken, NJ.
In March of 2006, Raymond founded the Rutgers Theatre Alumni Network (The RTA). By March 2007, it had expanded to include over 400 alumni, with monthly ‘Gatherings’ in New York & Los Angeles, a weekly e-newsletter, and a website in production.
Travel
Travel has been a huge part of Raymond’s life and education. At a young age, he began accompanying his father on trips to work cattle on various ranches throughout the South East and Texas. When in High School, he began traveling abroad, seizing school opportunities to go to France, Great Britain, and Mexico. He enjoyed road trips with his tight network of friends, going to see concerts and camping all over the country. In college, he studied abroad for a summer semester at St. John’s College, Oxford England and backpacked all over England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. He last backpacked solo in Germany and Poland.
